A question I’m often asked is “what is a good therapist like?” When I first sat down to write this article I didn’t know how to begin and it took me a lot of searching. I’ve listed some of my best tips below that you can use to find a great therapist.

Find a therapist that matches your personality type. For example, some people are so self conscious they need a shoulder to lean on and tend to their every need. Other people are quite comfortable with the idea of being the one to tell someone else how to live their life. You need to find a therapist that matches your personality type.

Find a therapist who has a background in mental health. This doesn’t mean they have to be certified but it does mean that they have a background in psychology. Therapists who have backgrounds in mental health will generally be able to offer you more personal attention because they understand more than the rest of us do. This means they can offer you more insight into why you’re having problems.

Don’t be afraid to ask for references. This might sound stupid but you’d be surprised how many good therapists won’t offer references. Therapists won’t be putting you in contact with past clients simply to make themselves look good or because they don’t want you to find out about their past. It’s important to ask for references from people you trust, especially if they went with that therapist before. This way you can ensure they really were a good fit for them.

If you find yourself at a crossroads and you need to choose between two therapists that you really want to work with, take it slow. Some therapists won’t offer references until they know you well and you have established a level of trust. You should avoid therapists that are vague when it comes to what makes a good therapist, though, as this indicates they may have a lot of hidden expectations that aren’t truly met in most cases.
