Before we get any further into the three types of therapy, let’s discuss just what they are. The American Psychological Association has been giving a definition of this which is “the application of cognitive behavioral principles to treat emotional and psychological disorders”. The Association has been doing this for almost 100 years now. This is basically where the mental health field has incorporated psychology into their treatments. The next three are marriage and family therapy, psychotherapy and mental health counseling.
What are the differences between these three? Let’s quickly look at one of the most common types. Family and marriage therapy is a one on one type of therapy that typically deals with marriage or family problems. It helps you work through problems as a whole. There are many different types of family therapy including Christian family therapy, Jewish family therapy, and even adoption related family therapy.
Psychotherapy is one that is done in an informal setting, or group session. The goal of this type of therapy is to help the individual discover and express their experiences and emotions. Sometimes they are held weekly, or even monthly meetings. This therapy can also be done online. There are many ways that therapy can be conducted.
Mental health counseling is another term that is used interchangeably with psychotherapy. This therapy is for more serious mental health conditions. They can be done either individually or in groups, depending upon the severity of the condition. Counseling can also help in groups if that is what the individual needs to do.
If you have never heard of some of these types of therapy, then you should learn more about them. One of the most common types is cognitive behavioral therapy. This therapy is actually what we would call a behavioral therapy. That is, it targets a negative behavior and try to alter it. The goal is to help the individual change the way they act, which can make a big difference in their life.
One type of therapy is known as somatic therapy. It deals with the body. The purpose of this therapy is to help a client manage and overcome some of the ailments that they are having. This could be dealing with things such as chronic pain or even chronic fatigue.
A third type of therapy is known as work therapy. It deals with a worker who is having problems at work. Some of the issues can be dealing with being able to concentrate or even just finishing the task at hand. Work therapy can also help a person with their family life.
Now that you know a little bit more about each of these different types of therapy, you will be able to decide for yourself. Do you need one for yourself or are you fine handling everything on your own? If you find that you are in need of something personal to help you manage your mental health, then get more information about what are the 3 types of therapy? Remember, you are never too old to start caring for yourself!
As mentioned above, the first one we will look at is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It deals with the thoughts and behaviors that you have going on in your head. Usually a good therapist will be able to identify your negative thoughts and change them. For example, if you think you are a horrible person because of a past event you may want to see a therapist. They may even be able to help you realize that it was all in your head.
The second one we will look at is Behavior Therapy. This works mainly with a job counselor or therapist who helps the person with their work related issues. They may be able to help you with getting better hours at work, adjusting to a new workplace, or just learning to manage your mental health so that you do not have as many accidents or slip ups at work.
The third and final type we will discuss is Family Therapy. This is for family members or friends who have a problem dealing with mental health issues. Sometimes people try to talk to their family about their problems but they cannot overcome the problem. In this setting, a therapist can work with the family and try to work through some of the underlying issues or problems that may be causing the mental health issue to arise. This therapy will usually require some face to face time between the patient and the therapist.
As you can see, there are many different types of therapy out there. Some are geared more toward people in recovery while others are more geared toward helping those who are having a hard time coping. No matter what you need help with, it is important to know what the different types of therapy are so that you can choose the one that is best for you. Remember, no one should be judged for their illness, so do not judge a person before you know what they are dealing with.
